Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Classes at Bikram Yoga Hampden!
Mindfulness is increasingly in the popular press, with benefits for almost every difficulty or diagnosis.
My belief is that in order to be whole or healed, we must embrace life as it is rather than resisting and wishing life away when it doesn’t go the way we planned.
Mindfulness practice teaches us that we always get to choose what gets our attention and how to attend to it. This gives us access to many more choices in life than the ones available when we move from one experience to the next on automatic pilot. It is not about always having to have joy or happiness, or having to “get your way”. Instead, you can learn to embrace with skill and clarity whatever life brings; recognize each moment as precious and worthy of your full attention and yes, even find gratitude. In a sense, it’s about learning to make lemonade from the lemons of life and by virtue of that discovering richness never before imagined even in challenging circumstances! That requires some practice for most of us.
This class trains us to do just that. In our 8 weekly 2.5 hour classes, we practice working with breath, re-inhabiting the body through the practices of yoga and yoga nidra, and learning to work with the mind by practicing formal sitting meditation. There will be a didactic part of class as well as time for group practice and discussion.
There are weekly homework assignments that teach us how to take what we practice together into our own individual lives, for the benefit of ourselves and others. You will receive 5 CDs or mp3 files for home practice, a notebook and the opportunity to attend a half day silent retreat. We practice together in class, but if you wish for your life to really change, you are invited to take this work seriously, do the homework as offered and really let it infiltrate all parts of your life. I am pleased to be able to offer 25.5 CEUs for Social Workers and 15 CEUs for acupuncturists.

About your instructor:
Gina L. Sager MD, RYT
I am a retired board-certified general surgeon, named one of Baltimore’s Top Docs in October 2000. I permanently left the practice of traditional Western medicine in May 2002 to explore my long time interest in holistic healing. I have studied and practiced Buddhism in the Tibetan tradition, studied the ancient wisdom traditions including Traditional Chinese wisdom and 5 element theory at Tai Sophia Institute, and completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training in Integrative Yoga Therapy at Yama Studio in Baltimore in 2005. I completed several professional training courses with Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society and have used the wisdom of Ayurveda for personal healing since 2000. I have also completed 60 hours of professional Ayurvedic Nutrition training with internationally known teacher and author, Amadea Morningstar.
It is an honor to be able to offer this work so dear to my heart in Bikram Yoga Hampden’s new space BYH Loft. My life, as well as the lives of many past class participants has been changed, even saved by these practices. In Ayurveda, it is said that the best physician is one who teaches patients to care for themselves. In this spirit, I believe that my path is to share what I have learned on my transformative journey by offering others sacred space and the opportunity to reconnect with their own deepest nature, and learn to care for themselves using these ancient, holistic practices.
